Mpumalanga taxi violence leaves 3 dead

Twenty-nine people have appeared in the
Evander Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the deaths of
three people during violent clashes at a taxi rank in eMbalenhle in
Mpumalanga.
The incident occurred on Wednesday.
A police officer was shot and injured after responding to a call of an ongoing conflict between the taxi and bus industry in the area.
Police say that a shootout ensued between police officials and the taxi drivers, which left three people dead.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Leornard Hlathi says the case will be handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).
“On Wednesday, there was a cop shot and injured and we took him to hospital and was discharged.
“We had three casualties in that regard and regarding the three casualties, Ipid has been tasked with the responsibility to investigate this matter as it is in their mandate to do so.”
