A local councillor has appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on charges of kidnapping and assault.
Thirty-nine-year-old William Phetla appeared in court on Tuesday along with his co-accused Kholofelo Manola, Lui Nkadimeng and Thabo Ntuli.
Phetla is accused of assaulting and kidnapping his domestic worker.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says the 29-year-old woman, who is believed to be pregnant, was accused of stealing the councillor’s laptop.
“She was allegedly kidnapped and severely assaulted with some objects, including a garden spade, before they locked her in a room. Further allegations indicate that her assailants burnt chillies whilst she was inside the room.
“The victim was later rescued by community members, and in the early hours of Tuesday, she reported the matter to Mhluzi SAPS”.
Phetla has been released on R3000 bail, while his co-accused were granted R500 bail each.
They are expected back in court on 25 August.
