Msimanga was speaking at Mountain View train station where two trains collided - killing four and injuring more than 300 passengers.

"The emergency services’ preliminary investigations reveal that at exactly 08h52 one train was waiting for a signal to proceed when a secondary train came from behind and crashed."

Msimanga says the area between Mabopane and Pretoria is notorious for both crashes and incidents of theft.

"That line has always been a problem. We are asking for is Prasa to really pull up their socks and make sure they deal with the theft and also the signal that is outdated to ensure that they are able to get that on order."

Msimanga says he will be visiting the families of the deceased.

"On behalf of the City of Tshwane, I relay our heartfelt and sincere condolences to the families of those that have lost lives and wish all those injured a speedy recovery.

"Although the investigation is ongoing, we call on the law enforcement authorities to strengthen their fight against cable theft and vandalism to state infrastructure, which we believe it has caused damage to the railway signal system, which in turn led to this heart-breaking incident."
