MULTIMEDIA: Vaal River sewerage nightmare

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has expressed its concern over sewerage spilling into the Vaal River.
The commission conducted a walkabout in the region on Monday to assess the extent of the sewage spillage into the river.
The commission will hold an inquiry in September in an effort to get to the bottom of the crisis.

Samngweni says the municipality has received an R20 million grant from the Department of Water and Sanitation to upgrade its pump stations in order to improve their functionality.
"We can make a commitment with you now, that in the next coming few weeks or months we would have dealt with the pumps spilling into the river.”
