Multiple lives lost on Tshwane roads over the Easter weekend
Nine people have died in different areas across the metro's roads since Friday.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso says the accidents occurred at Lochner Road in Raslow near Centurion, Britz Road near the Straightfontein Butchery north of Pretoria and on Pretorious Street, between Nelson Mandela Drive and Steve Biko Street in the Pretoria City Center.
On Friday, three motorists lost their lives while the other three patients sustained injuries ranging from critical to severe when two vehicles collided.
"The Tshwane Emergency Services Department arrived at this incident to find that two patients were already transported to Kalafong Hospital by a private ambulance service. Firefighters had to use the "Jaws of Life to free some trapped motorists from one of the vehicles," said Mabaso.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, a bakkie overturned on Britz Road near the Straightfontein Butchery north of Pretoria, critically injuring two occupants.
"Emergency Services arrived on the scene to find the two motorists still trapped inside the wreckage of the bakkie and also had to use the 'Jaws of Life' to free the critically injured patients," added Mabaso.
Meanwhile, on Saturday afternoon, nine-year-old and 17-year-old males both succumbed to their injuries following a motor vehicle collision on the N1 South bound carriageway in the vicinity of the Olifantsfontein turn-off.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen says upon arrival at the scene it was found that an SUV had overturned after colliding with another vehicle.
"The rollover resulted in some of the occupants being ejected from the vehicle. Prior to the arrival of paramedics, three children were allegedly rushed to a nearby hospital by bystanders," says Kyle van Reenen.
"A seventeen-year-old male patient was found to have sustained critical injuries after being ejected from the vehicle, Emer-G-Med paramedics exhausted several advanced life support resuscitation methods, however unfortunately, the patient succumbed to the critical injuries that he sustained, and he was declared dead on the scene."
"Further investigation found a nine-year-old boy unresponsive in the overturned vehicle with fatal catastrophic injuries. There was nothing paramedics could do to assist him, and he was declared dead on the scene."
"An adult male and female from the same vehicle, as well as three occupants of the secondary vehicle sustained moderate injuries and were treated and stabilized on scene before being transported to a nearby hospital."
On Sunday morning, four male teenagers were declared dead on the scene when a vehicle they were traveling in lost control and overturned on Pretorious Street, between Nelson Mandela Drive and Steve Biko Street in the Pretoria City Center.
The vehicle owner arrived on the scene around 6 am after being notified of the accident by the vehicle tracking company.
"The causes of all accidents have not yet been determined and will be investigated by law enforcement authorities. We are making a repeated call for motorists to continue acting responsibly and safely, and at all times adhere to rules of the road when driving," said Mabaso.
