SA Human Rights Commission chairman Lawrence Mushwana was officially inaugurated on Tuesday as the new chairman of the International Co-ordinating Committee (ICC) of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.
"Mushwana took over the reins from Dr Mousa Burayzat... during the session in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday," commission spokesman Isaac Mangena said in a statement. "This is a historical occasion in that this is the first time that Africa heads the office of the chairperson of the ICC." Mangena said this marked a symbolic point in South Africa's legacy of human rights, having transitioned from apartheid to democracy.
"The SAHRC looks forward to leading the ICC in supporting its work to strengthen co-operation and collaboration..." "The position of ICC chairperson is a prestigious international position that will attract attention to South Africa and the region as a whole." He said there would be increased attention on the country's human rights track record and its compliance with international human rights obligations.
