Musician will stand trial: Lawyer

Musician Sipho Ndlovu will stand trial and answer to the charge he faces, the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court heard on Monday.

"The accused will remain within the borders of the country and stand trial. He was born and bred here... he lives here," Ndlovu's lawyer Isaac Mokgopi said during the kwaito star's bail application.

Mokgopi was responding to the closing arguments opposing his bail application by prosecutor Willem le Roux.

Ndlovu, who performs under the name Brickz, has been in custody since November 1 for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in March.

In an affidavit submitted as part of his bail application, Ndlovu denied raping the girl and indicated he intended pleading not guilty.

Mokgopi said Ndlovu did not commit any further crime after he was arrested for drug possession in 2007. Ndlovu paid a fine.

Mokgopi was at pains to argue that his client should be granted R2000 bail.

"This is a bail application, not a trial. The accused will still have a day in court and answer to the charge."

The bail hearing continues.
