The ACDP embarked on a campaign to lobby for support to have the Constitution amended to allow for corporal punishment in the home and in schools.
African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader, Reverent Kenneth Meshoe says parents need to be disciplined enough to be able to discipline their children.
This as the ACDP embarked on a campaign to lobby for support to have the Constitution amended to allow for corporal punishment in the home and in schools.

Meshoe says the ACDP now wants SOuth AFrican laws to be amended.
"We believe raising up children and disciplining children is a God-given responsibility and the state has no reason to deny parents from exercising their God-given responsibility on their children," says Meshoe.

Responding to concerns that corporal punishment allows the room for abuse of children, Meshoe says parents need to be trained in how to discipline their children.
"When parents allow anger to take over, that's when they make mistakes," says Meshoe.
"When you love a child you cannot make your child a punching bag," he insists. "It means your emotions have taken over and you are not as disciplined yourself as you should be as a parent."

Meshoe goes on to say that the Constitutional amendments that the ACDP are lobbying for would impact on the Bill of Rights.
"If the Bill of Rights is producing what we have - producing people who are stealing and looting and destroying- then let us amend the Bill of Rights so that we can have better citizens," he says.
