Myeni breaks silence at Zondo commission to claim innocence

Former South African Airways (SAA) chairperson Dudu Myeni has told the commission of inquiry into state capture that she is innocent of the allegations against her.

Myeni, who is also the chairperson of the Jacob Zuma Foundation, testified at the commission for a third day on Friday.

She continued to invoke her privilege not to answer to certain allegations in order not to incriminate herself.

Advocate Kate Hofmeyr presented slips from 2014 to 2016, which suggest Myeni might have made large cash deposits into the bank account of the Zuma Foundation.

Former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi told the commission Myeni was given bribes, in the form of cash and other benefits, to do favours for the company, including to facilitate meetings with Zuma.

Myeni refused to confirm whether she made the deposits which bears her signature.

When she was asked about allegations that she was involved in an invasive and unlawful vetting process of employees who had access to sensitive information at SAA, she refused to answer, except to tell the commission that she was innocent.

Myeni claims the instruction came from former State Security Minister David Mahlobo to former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene.

"The reason I asked for the letter from Mahlobo to be read because it appears from what is being said and asked that I am the one who asked for the security vetting of all SOEs, and I don't think any chairperson can do this. There is an insinuation that I would use state organs. These are unfair views, I am here as an innocent person."

Hofmeyr also asked about allegations that law enforcement obtained a search warrant for Myeni's house in KwaZulu-Natal, where Bosasa is alleged to have provided security upgrades.

Myeni is alleged to have first refused then entry and later granted only limited access.

"What person can just access somebody's house without her being present on the premises? I can see that I have no rights as a black woman, because no white woman who has a house without her being in the premises can allow just any person to walk into the house," said Myeni.
