A plume of smoke could be seen rising from the N1 in Pretoria on Friday after a car caught fire near the Garsfontein off-ramp.
The Tshwane metro police says the car caught fire after it was involved in a crash.
Spokesperson Issac Mahamba says there were no other cars involved.
"What we know at this stage is that there were two passengers and a driver and they just disappeared. As the department, we are trying to trace the whereabouts of those two passengers and the driver.
Emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso says the blaze has been extinguished and no one was injured.
Mabaso adds that they suspect the vehicle might have been transporting oil.
"It's a light motor vehicle or bakkie that seemed to be carrying about 200 liter drums of oil."
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the the blaze.
