Nasi iSpani not electioneering or cadre deployment, says Lesufi

Gauteng ANC Chairperson Panyaza Lesufi has again denied claims that the provincial government’s Nasi iSpani programme is mere electioneering.

The premier’s denials follow accusations by some opposition parties that the re-hiring of 32,000 young people is meant to garner more support for the ANC in the run-up to the general elections.

The programme was launched on Youth Day 2023.

Lesufi said the programme would fill thousands of vacant posts at the provincial government in various sectors, including Education, Health, Social Development, Transport, Infrastructure, Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment.

The premier’s latest remarks came on the same day as the ANC lost its Constitutional Court bid to appeal an earlier ruling ordering it to hand over all its records and documents relating to cadre deployment.

This after the DA filed legal papers against the ANC last year to have the governing party’s cadre deployment policy declared unconstitutional and unlawful.

Lesufi said the practice cadre deployment is misunderstood.

“We are entering a crucial stage where we will defend the African National Congress in our province. Our message is clear, we want to win Gauteng without any form of coalition, without any form of factional partners. We will win Gauteng alone, and we will govern this province alone.

“Cadre deployment means that somebody who is highly qualified, competent, committed to serving and ready to ensure that the work is executed must be given an opportunity where he meets the profile of those particular jobs.

“All these political parties they serve in the legislature, they know we have put these jobs in our APPs. They can hold us accountable if we are using these jobs for electioneering. They are not doing that. What is the shortcut is to go on a public platform and insult these programmes?”
