Unions confirm resumption of negotiations to end bus drivers' strike
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) says negotiations to try and bring an end to the nationwide strike by bus drivers will resume on Thursday.
The industrial action, which has left thousands of commuters stranded, is in its third week.
Workers are demanding a 9% wage increase for the first year and 8.5% for the second year.
Bus companies are offering a 9% salary increase for the first year and 8% for the second year.
The transport union's Zanele Sabela says other sticking points include the dual driver system and the payment of night shift allowances.
"A meeting between unions and the employer to resume negotiations has been confirmed for tomorrow (Thursday) morning in Johannesburg. So we will see what that brings."
The Department of Transport's Sithembhele Jede says the unions met earlier this week to considers the offer put on the table by the employer.
"We are hoping that in their caucus they were able to come up with some resolutions in terms of accepting the positions that they were given in the last round of negotiations. We are in fact hoping that they did consider it positively, as well as the employers on the other side."
