Nehawu in Eastern Cape welcomes Gomba’s axing
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) in the Eastern Cape has welcomed the axing of the province’s Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba.
Gomba has been axed by Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) charged her with graft relating to former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral.
She and ten co-accused appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court last week.
Gomba was released on R1000 bail.
Nehawu's Secretary Miki Jaceni said the labour union has always said the department must be run by some who is focused.
"It needs somebody who can focus, somebody who has requisite understanding in terms of the qualification, in terms of the skills and everything else.
“We hope with the appointment of MEC of Cogta things might change for better. We are willing to work with him," said Jaceni.
Jaceni added they welcome the appointment of Cooperative Governance MEC Xolile Nqatha as acting Health MEC.
Mabuyane told the media on Thursday that Gomba would vacate her position immediately.
