The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has announced a wage  strike at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria.

According to the union's Khaya Xaba salary negotiations deadlocked at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration yesterday, resulting in workers deciding to down tools.

"We are going on a full blown, national strike tomorrow until Unisa agrees to pay workers what is true to them," he says.

Workers are demanding a 14% salary increase this year, while the university is offering a 4,5% increase.

"In our view, Unisa does have the money because they have been spending money on useless things like a R15 million library software update as well as another R100 million on another IT system which is unusable," he says.

Nehawu and UNISA have been engaging in wage talks since late last year.

"We started with pickets on Monday and the campuses are closed, but the official strike will kick-off tomorrow and will resume until management adheres to our demands," Xaba adds.
