NEHAWU welcomes J&J suspension

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) says government’s decision to suspend the Johnson & Johnson vaccine roll out will help ease anxiety amongst health workers.
South Africa has temporarily put the brakes on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine rollout out amid concerns about the adverse reaction of a handful of patients abroad.
The United States reported a total of six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the vaccine.
Nehawu says it appreciates government’s decision and has called on frontline workers already vaccinated with J&J to report any illness.

Spokesperson for the union, Khaya Xaba, says they are also requesting the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to continue checking and confirming the safety of vaccines.
"The national union reiterates its call for the government to look at other countries for vaccines.
"Our search for effective and safe vaccines must also consider Cuba, China and Russia.
"With the third wave very imminent, it is very imperative to move with speed in securing vaccines in order to reach herd immunity," adds Xaba.
The union reiterates the need for South Africans to remain vigilant stick to regulations.
