Nersa, Competition Commission probing 96% hike in gas prices
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) and the Competition Commission are investigating the looming price hike in piped gas by Sasol.
This follows concerns over a move by Sasol Gas to raise piped gas prices by 96 percent.
The commission says it has received numerous complaints since February and has a duty to investigate the company.
The commission’s spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga says the price increase is having an impact on businesses and households.
"This will have an impact in terms of seeing prices increasing in various industries that depend on the pipeline gas in terms of their production.
"In the space of manufacturing, there will be increases on essential products because industrial players rely on this product in terms of running their operations."
Makunga adds that Nersa and the commission will both probe the possible contravention of the Competition Act.
"I am told that even Nersa is pursuing an investigation. You recall that the commission has got an MOU with Nersa and we should be able to share notes with Nersa in understanding their line of investigation focusing only on competition-related allegations to establish whether or not there has been a contravention of the Competition Act."
