New coalition moves to oust ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay

The African National Congress (ANC) will soon no longer hold the keys to the mayoral chain in Nelson Mandela Bay following the formation of a new multi-party coalition.

The ANC’s Eugene Johnson was elected as the new mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay after the national elections in November last year.

She won by a single vote from the DA’s Nqaba Bhanga.

The new multi-party coalition agreement was signed on Thursday.

The DA, UDM, ACDP, African Independent Congress, the PAC, FF-Plus and the African Integrity Movement have vowed to take the troubled metro forward.

“There is no denying the terrible state of the metro and the urgent need for a change in government to improve basic service delivery for the residents,” said DA leader John Steenhuisen.

The multi-party coalition has vowed not to waste any time in taking steps to remove the current ANC-led administration that governs Nelson Mandela Bay.

The coalition says it will now start working on a petition for a council meeting to convene.

This petition will need 61 signatures from councillors, meaning that the coalition, which has 56 seats in the council, will need to rally other parties.

The EFF is not part of this new coalition but indicated previously that it would support any party that wants to remove the ANC from power.
