The anti-apartheid activist Gift Moerane was inaugurated as the new mayor of the Emfuleni local municipality in the Vaal Triangle on Thursday.

"The first one is to clean the townships, that one is non-negotiable and we must do that immediately. We might have a challenge of trucks but I know the province will be there to assist us as to where we can get the trucks that can come to collect the dumpsters that are all over the townships.”

His second priority will be the repairing of roads.

"So these two items are critical for me to making sure that we start doing that because I'm entering that office already the acting mayor had a plan of 90 days so we are in the 90 days plan and it includes these two items.”

Moerane says he won't be implementing new strategies, but rather realign the existing ones.
