New Eskom chief to be appointed soon
Updated | By Silindelo Masikane
Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown hopes to appoint a new acting CEO for Eskom before the end of the week.
Brown has instructed the Eskom board to rescind its decision to reappointment Brian Molefe as head of the power utility.
She announced her decision during a press briefing by the inter-ministerial committee appointed to investigate Molefe's reappointment.
Brown says the Eskom board must now provide her with two names within the executive to act as CEO.
She says she has not spoken to Molefe to inform him of the decision.
"I have not spoken to Brian Molefe. That is a conversation that the board must have with him," she says.
Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba says the decision to reappoint Molefe led to reputational damage for Eskom, government and minister Brown.
"The events of the last few weeks have been painful. Painful in a number of ways. When it comes to the governance of state-owned companies, we should not act correctly to please rating agencies - we should act correctly because the resources they hold, they hold on behalf of the people of South Africa," he says.
