New report finds SA ‘one of most criminal, corrupt countries’

Tax Justice SA founder Yusuf Abramjee says South Africa being listed as a global hotspot for organised crime should serve as a wake-up call.

Abramjee has been commenting on the latest Global Organised Crime Index, which was released earlier this week.

"Our nation has now earned the title of one of the most criminal and corrupt countries in the world."

According to the report, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria have the highest rating for criminality on the continent.

The study examines the effect of crime in 193 UN member states.

With a score of 7.18%, South Africa received the highest crime rating among 13 Southern African countries.

Abramjee says the report's a damning indictment of those responsible for upholding the rule of law.

"A lack of political will, coupled with corruption and incompetence at the highest level, has turned South Africa into a paradise for gangsters.

"Organised crime networks are impoverishing our country and threatening the peace and security of citizens in a country that should be an economic powerhouse and a leader in social justice."

Our country ranks third of 54 countries in Africa and seventh out of 193 countries.

The index shows that the number of people living in countries with high levels of organised crime has increased in the last two years.
