The Gauteng provincial government has launched a scholar transport app to ensure operators adhere to all the Covid-19 regulations.

Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo launched the app in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The app allows drivers to log information during the morning commute as well as in the afternoon when they pick up pupils from school.

This information will allow both the parents and government to monitor compliance with the Covid-19 guidelines.

"If something goes wrong and there are questions to be answered about whether a vehicle complied, the app will be able to assist with giving such information,” said Mamabolo.

“However, if the driver doesn't enter that information and learner contracts the virus, that driver will be held liable.”

Scholar transport vehicles will in future also be required to have a government-endorsed sticker on their vehicle.

"On Monday, law enforcement will be on the road enforcing the laws and any car found on the road carrying learners without this compliance sticker, the driver will face the might of the law,” Mamabolo warned.
