The Gauteng City-Region Observatory released its latest quality of life survey at the University of Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Research director Graeme Gotz says while satisfaction has improved in Ekurhuleni and Midvaal, there has been a steady decline in both Johannesburg and Tshwane.

“This does not mean that satisfaction in these two metros is down across the board. Satisfaction with some services is up. The overall decline is mainly driven by lower satisfaction with government-provided dwellings, services cost and billing,” says Gotz.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says he is concerned about the issues facing Tshwane. “I am quite concerned about the regression in Tshwane. Because if you look at what people say about the quality of water, there is very specific incidents. The Hammanskraal water situation, if you look at the various things that people are citing, there is evidence even before the survey. I just hope there won’t be ducking and diving that the mayor there will understand that he really needs to respond like a leader.” Makhura warns if there is any further deterioration in Tshwane then the Gauteng government may need to intervene.

The 2017/2018 Quality of Life survey has revealed that there has been an overall improvement in the quality of life in the province over time.

In the 2015/2016 survey, the quality of life was at 6.2/10 and in 2017/2018 it  increased to 6.30.
