New Tshwane DA mayor cuts lavish parties
Newly-elected Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga has implemented immediate cost-cutting measures, which include a ban on inaugural parties and celebratory dinners.
Msimanga on Wednesday also announced a moratorium on international travel for city officials and politicians.
It comes in a bid to save money and redirect funds to service delivery.
Tshwane acting mayoral spokesperson Matthew Gerstner said applications for international travel will have to be made to the mayoral committee and will be subject to a cost-benefit analysis.
"There has to be a clear benefit to the City of Tshwane for any international travel to be approved and only if the cost justifies the benefit in terms of economic development, trade or job creation," he said.

All officials have been notified of the interventions and will be expected to comply with immediate effect.
"The more money that can be directed to service delivery in Tshwane, the faster we can turn around the rot that has been left and the faster we can improve people's lives," Gerstner said.
The savings these interventions will result in are being calculated.
