New union Limusa claims it is growing

The Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa (Limusa) is growing despite lacking resources, general secretary Cedric Gina said on Tuesday.
“We are building the union, although we have challenges regarding human resources and money. We are well received and I think with the necessary resources we can do better,” he said on the sidelines of the Congress of South African Trade Unions congress in Midrand.
Limusa was formed in July 2014 and was officially registered a few months later as a trade union on 28 November, by the department of labour. It was accepted as an affiliate of Cosatu in March this year.
However, the Food and Allied Union (Fawu) on Monday, objected to the presence of Limusa as an affiliate in the congress.
Gina said the union found it difficult to recruit members at companies where the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) operated.
“Some employers colluded with Numsa [National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa] to frustrate our members,” he charged. Gina resigned as Numsa president in 2013 and help to established Limusa. - ANA
