Newly re-launched Police TRT unit deployed to Nyanga
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has expressed his shock after 11 people were shot and killed during various incidents in the Marikana informal settlement outside Cape Town.
Police Ministry spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga says this is the same area where 7 people were also killed a week ago - in what is believed to have been vigilante murders.
Mhaga said this is exactly why Mbalula gives his full backing to the TRT unit.
“These kind of attacks to our people can’t continue and Police are expected to fold arms and do nothing. Police are mandated to respond and they will respond in defense of our people and stability of democracy.”
Mhaga added Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Major General Mpumelelo Manci, has also been deployed to the area.
“The Major General Manci will be supported by a team, comprising specialist detectives, intelligence operatives and high risk unites such as Tactical Response Team (TRT) members, National Intervention Unit (NIU)."
Minister Mbalula has called upon community of Phillipi to help the Police to find these ruthless criminals who have no regard for life and bring them to book.
