Seven suspects were shot and killed while 10 others were arrested when police swooped on a local church on Friday evening.

The suspects are believed to be behind Wednesday's shooting of five police officers at the Ngcobo Police Station.

Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini says investigators went to the scene of the shootings soon after it occurred.

"We sent our investigators who started an investigation. That investigation is ongoing. At this stage we will not be able to say how long it will take, but we have given it priority and hope to conclude that investigation soon."

National police commissioner Khela Sitole told the community in Ngcobo on Saturday that criminals targeting police officers will face the full might of the law.

At the same meeting, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said officers did not intend to kill the suspects but that they were given no choice.

"The aim was not to kill, but when they charge at the police we must respond adequately and properly."
