Ngcobo to preside over SARS disciplinary proceedings
Updated | By sibahle motha

This was confirmed by SARS spokesperson Luther Lebelo yesterday.
In December, Pillay and Richer were suspended amid allegations of a secret intelligence unit engaging in illegal activities in SARS.
Pillay's suspension was then overturned by the Labour Court in Johannesburg. However, shortly after that he was served with a second notice of suspension.
In January, the dispute between SARS and Pillay was settled but he remained suspended. The dispute had to do with the suspension on December 5 and was resolved through the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.
Pillay and Richer were facing disciplinary following the findings of two investigative services used by SARS.
Earlier today, Fin24 reported that the SARS disbanded the so-called rogue unit, which was created in 2007.
A government-appointed investigation found that the unit had damaged the public’s confidence in the institution.
The SARS “does not have and did not have the statutory authority to covertly gather intelligence,” Judge Frank Kroon, who heads a committee probing allegations of impropriety at the agency, told reporters in Johannesburg.
No budget was allocated for the unit and money and human resources spent on it was wasteful and fruitless, the committee found. SARS Commissioner Tom Moyane has disbanded the unit, Kroon said.
