NHI set to create ‘healthier population’

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize believes the National Health Insurance (NHI) will benefit the well-being of all South Africans.
Mkhize explained the bill at a function in Johannesburg on Thursday – the day it would be officially introduced in Parliament.

Mkhize said when the NHI becomes law all South Africans to receive universal health coverage.
“The NHI will benefit all South African citizens, permanent residents, inmates, designated foreign nationals and all children,” Mkhize said.
“Expenditure in health must never be seen as a wasteful expenditure but must be seen as an investment to a healthier population and an investment to the development of human capital.”
“An enormous amount of research over the decades has informed our implementation process.”
The NHI will be implemented in phases and is expected to be fully functional by 2026.
