NICD forecasts increase in Covid-19 cases in Gauteng

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says its wastewater detection surveillance shows an increase in Covid-19 cases in Gauteng.
The surveillance is used as an early warning indicator.
The institute reported 4 406 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours with 49% of the cases in Gauteng.
The rise reflects a 15.8% increase in positivity rate.
The National Department of Health reported 65 fatalities, with five occurring during the last 24 to 48 hours.
This puts the overall number of fatalities at 100,276.
There has also been an increase of 66 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
The NICD’s Waasila Jassat says there is evidence of small increases in Covid-19 hospitalisation in Gauteng, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.
However, there has not been an increase in Covid-19 deaths.
Jassat says it’s now time for people who have not yet been vaccinated against coronavirus, to get their jabs and also get their booster shots.
“The NICD recommends that persons who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 be vaccinated and get booster shots as needed. Persons over the age of 65, those at risk of serious disease, and those eligible for boosters should take advantage of the shorter time to immunisation.”
