The suspects are believed to be part of a fraud syndicate operating in Gauteng.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says their arrests come almost a year after two other suspects were nabbed.

"Police arrested two suspects in Nigel in June 2016 after they were found with fraudulent documents that include identity documents, bank statements and municipal bills," says Masondo.

"It is alleged that the suspects targeted banks, furniture shops and retails stores where they would produce these fraudulent documents to open accounts and apply for loans."

Masondo says investigations following the arrests of the two initial suspects led them to Yeoville on Friday.

"Police recovered computers, software, hardware, IDs, bank statements and some other documents. Nine people that includes two women and seven men were arrested during the tracing and raiding," says Masondo.

Police are still investigating if the alleged fraudsters targeted people outside Gauteng.
