Nine Joburg buildings evacuated due to non-compliance

The Department of Infrastructure Development has evacuated all nine buildings that did not meet the health and safety standards.

This follows a fire that erupted at the Bank of Lisbon building last week, which claimed the lives of three firefighters.
The department says staff from the various provincial government departments will now report to alternative working spaces from Tuesday.
"Every department that is affected has now worked out a plan and they held this meetings this morning with all their staff. All staff know where to report from tomorrow," says provincial spokesperson Thabo Masebe.
Urgent work will now begin on the buildings to ensure healthy and safety is up to scratch.
Meanwhile, the provincial government is continuing to find alternative spaces for the departments that have been affected in the Bank of Lisbon fire.
"We are still looking for alternative accommodation for them, but key staff from those departments will be allocated working space in other government buildings," adds Masebe.
