Nkandla cop in court for petrol station murder

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating another murder at the hands of law enforcement in KwaZulu-Natal.

Nkandla police officer Buyisani Biyela is accused of shooting and killing a man earlier this month. 


Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola says the Biyela fired the fatal shots during an altercation outside a local petrol station. 


“Biyela, who is 28 years of age, based in Nkandla Police Station was on his way home from work. He then stopped at the garage to buy something to eat, the accused was allegedly not wearing a mask he requested the cashier to assist him whilst he was standing outside.  


“As alleged, there was an exchange of words between the member and four other males (whom he found at the station) which led to one of them assaulting the member. The police officer allegedly fired shots, fatally wounding one male whilst others fled the scene,” Cola explains.

Gauteng police are searching for a man believed to be Duduzile Dlamini's boyfriend in connection with the murder. Police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters says the body of the 26-year-old was found in a house in the area. "Preliminary evidence suggests that the woman was stabbed multiple times with a weapon found not far from the scene.

Biyela made his first appearance at the Nkandla Magistrate’s Court last week. 


He’s expected to appear again on Friday for a formal bail application. 


“Ipid continues with the full investigation of this matter,” Cola adds.
