No arrests in North West hotel, hospital fires

Chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in North West, Paul Sebegoe, says no arrests have been made in connection with the two big fires in the province.
Both the historic Mmabatho Palms Hotel Casino in Mahikeng and the Christiana Hospital went up in flames last week.
“There are no arrests that we know of. The police have updated the public that they are working very hard to get to the bottom of the possible cause of the fire,” says Sebegoe.
“It has automatically affected communities that side, people in Mafikeng are dependent on government employment there are not many private sector opportunities that side. People working at the hotel are affected by virtue of not being able to go to work.”
With investigations still ongoing, Sebegoe says the estimated cost of damage for the hotel could be millions of rands.
“We have not yet been provided with an estimate, but what is important is that that facility is a heritage (site) for that reason it should be very expensive (to fix) especially because it went through a revamp not too long ago. We are estimating the damage to cost multi-millions.”
