No-confidence motion in Joburg mayor to be tabled next week

ActionSA says the motions of no confidence against Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad and Council Speaker Colleen Makhubele will be debated next week.

The city’s programming committee on Friday accepted ActionSA’s motions of no confidence in Amad and Makhubele to be heard on Wednesday.

“The motions will serve in council despite delaying tactics by the ANC-EFF coalition earlier this week when they absconded from attending a programming committee meeting. This is a victory for the residents of Johannesburg who have been embarrassed by an incompetent puppet Mayor installed by Panyaza Lesufi’s ANC and the EFF,” said ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni.

“The motions are also serving despite rumours that Mayor Amad might resign ahead of the MONC in an attempt to spare ANC-EFF coalition embarrassment, demonstrating that our call for the removal of Mayor Amad was indeed the correct one.

Ngobeni said Makhubele is not a fit and proper person to hold the position of speaker.

“Speaker Makhubele used ‘ill health’ as an excuse not to attend to her Council duties in the City of Johannesburg Council but was later spotted in the City of Tshwane on the same day where she is seen attending internal COPE party squabbles. This is simply inexcusable, and the people of Johannesburg deserve better.”

Ngobeni said ActionSA believes Amad has failed to deliver for the Joburg residents.

“Mayor Amad has among other things failed to implement the city’s policies such as the informal trading policy while service delivery continued to decline. Mayor Amad’s ANC-EFF coalition also voted against an ActionSA motion to remove bucket toilets in the city, leaving our most marginalised residents worse off.”
