No credible explanation from Eskom on reason for suspending load shedding – expert

Independent energy expert Tshepho Kgadima says Eskom has not been able to come up with a credible explanation as to how it’s managed to suspend load shedding.

The power utility announced on Monday that it would be suspending the planned power cuts until 4pm on Tuesday “due to the lower than anticipated demand”.

Stage 1 load shedding was expected to last until 4pm on Monday.

"What this country requires, or what this country legitimately demands from Eskom, is to end load shedding. Everything that they are doing now, let us give it time, let them come back to us, let them maintain no load shedding for the next 90 days. If they can maintain it for the next 90 days they can maintain it for the next 100 years.

“So, the fact that Eskom suspends load shedding today should not give us any hope whatsoever because they have not confidently come out that this is going to be the new normal. They talk about suspension, they should talk about ending. Then we can have hope as South Africans.”

Kgadima believes the suspension of the planned power cuts could be down to political interference.

"It is political, there is no evidence that Eskom has been able to explain as to how they have been able to achieve it. From an operations perspective there has not been any information that demonstrates that they have embarked on a very sustainable costs and maintenance programme which will bring loadshedding to an end.”
