No emotional decision on banning sale of alcohol: Makhura
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Gauteng Premier David Makhura says his government has not made any the decision on the contentious issue of the sale of alcohol.
This comes amid calls from some sectors of society to ban the sale of alcohol due to the negative impact it has on the country’s health services.
Briefing the media on the latest developments in the battle against Covid-19 on Friday, Makhura said his government has seen an increase in admissions to hospital trauma wards.
This, in turn, impacts the number of hospital beds reserved for Covid-19 patients.
Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku is compiling a report to see if the sale of alcohol has had any impact on the spread of Covid-19 in the province.
“We would like to approach this point of view with evidence, we don’t want to have an emotional relationship with this in a debate,” Makhura said.
“We want to be able to demonstrate whatever decision needs to be made. If we say currently the result of what we ate seeing is that there is more violence and motor vehicle accidents, we will come to that conclusion.”
