No end in sight for Pretoria Zoo strike
Updated | By Jacaranda FM news
The National Zoological Gardens (NZG) says non-striking workers are being intimidated amid the ongoing strike at the Pretoria Zoo.
Spokesperson for NZG Craig Allenby says property has also been damaged, while litter has been scattered at the entrance of the zoo.
Employees affiliated to the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) have been on strike since Saturday.
Workers are demanding to be paid overtime for work done over weekends.
Allenby says NTUC members are demanding that an agreement signed in 2009 be cancelled and employees in future be paid overtime.
"According to the agreement signed in 2009, Saturdays are considered normal working days and employees receive overtime payment for Sundays."
Allenby says demands raised by NTUC members are not practical, as the Zoo is open 7 days a week while animals also need to be fed every day.
The NZG has called for public patience and has also ensured the public that animals are cared for during this time of the strike.
