‘No guarantee’ Guptas will be extradited to SA, warns Gungubele

Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele says government cannot provide any guarantees on the successful extradition of the Gupta brothers back to South Africa.
Gungubele spoke at a media briefing on Thursday where he provided feedback on this week’s Cabinet meeting.
The meeting came days after the news of Atul and Rajesh Gupta arrest in Dubai on charges related to their role in state capture.
“We don’t have that guarantee, but the relationship that occurs between us and the UAE one would expect something better. I guess I’ll be surprised (if they are not extradited) considering the code and the principles of Interpol, because they make sure that countries work together in dealing with crime.

"I’d be surprised if it does not lead to them coming here at all. I’d also be surprised if they are not arrested based on what they did here in South Africa.”
The commission of inquiry into state capture, headed by then Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, placed the Gupta family at the centre of state capture during former president Jacob Zuma’s time in office.
According to the inquiry, the Gupta family unduly benefitted from state contracts worth at least R49 billion.
