"We have successfully returned Koeberg Unit 1 to service after a planned outage," says Eskom spokesperson Dikatso Mothae.

"This has added an additional 900MW to the system."

Unplanned outages stood on 13 859 megawatt on Sunday morning.

"Our teams continue to work around the clock to return units from planned and unplanned outages", says Mothae.

"The additional capacity brought on line, as well as lower demand over the weekend, has allowed us to replenish our pumped storage schemes."

Eskom has once again blamed insufficient maintenance over several years for the fact that the system remains vulnerable.

The power utility was also rocked by the resignation of board chairperson Jabu Mabuza on Friday.
