“I genuinely don’t think there is because we have contained the situation, we have learned from past experiences as the city and we were up to the task, I think that the city is in a very good space now under these circumstances.”

Tau says they have managed to relocate nearly 900 people across the city whose homes were affected by floods.

The MMC visited Mamelodi, east of Pretoria over the weekend to assess the damage caused and provide immediate relief to distressed residents whose houses submerged.

“We have housed everyone who has been affected in different community halls in the city, in total we have got under 900 people, and we have been feeding them with help from NGOs. We have not had major infrastructure damage, except for the widespread power failures in the city due to mini substations being flooded.”

Tau was the acting mayor of the City of Tshwane when floods destroyed over 700 shacks, displacing more than 1 300 people in Mamelodi in 2019.
