Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Department of Health on Tuesday said there is no need for a lockdown amid the continued rise in Mpox cases.
It confirmed the death of another patient who tested positive for the disease.
The latest is a 40-year-old man from Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal who was never admitted to hospital after testing positive.
This brings the death toll to three, with two reported in KZN and one in Gauteng.
The total number of confirmed positive cases sits at 16.
Last week, government received a batch of Mpox specific treatment, Tecovirimat (also known as TPOXX or ST-246) for treatment of patients who experience severe health complications because of the Mpox disease.
Spokesperson Foster Mohale said the patients had no international travel history.
"The department, has embarked on health education with funeral parlours on how to handle the human remains of demised due to suspected and confirmed mpox.
"We would like to allay fears of possible travel restrictions or lockdowns due to Mpox outbreak because the World Health Organization has not recommended any travel restrictions.
"However, it is important for travellers from Mpox endemic countries to seek health care if they are ill and to alert health officials about their travel for clinical guidance.”
