‘No one can stop us from doing our job’ - Malema on clash with police

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says the altercation with police outside Cape Town City Hall was as a result of them “trying to block EFF members from doing our jobs”.

A video of a physical standoff between some EFF MPs and the police ahead of  the State of the Nation Address (SONA) went viral.

The party’s secretary-general Marshall Dlamini can be seen showing his parliamentary access card to the police officers, while MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi can be heard asking “What is the problem? Why are you stopping us?”

Malema said no one can stop his party members from doing their job.

“The police blocked EFF people from entering Parliament, the police always come here agitated, but there is a problem here of racist police, amongst them the coloured police officers and white police officers.

“So, when they see the red overalls, they just get angry, for no reason because these are Members of Parliament.

“If you look in that commotion, the SG of the EFF is showing them a card that we are Members of Parliament. But they still don’t want to listen, but we can’t allow police to stop us from doing our jobs, we are here to do our job, no police, no army, no executive will stop us from executing our responsibilities.

“We are elected to hold the executive accountable, and we shall do so,” added Malema.
