No timeframe for repairs to fire-damaged Ontdekkers substation
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
City Power says its technicians are working around the clock to fix the damage to the Ontdekkers Substation in Roodepoort.
City Power has implemented an "emergency shutdown" at the substation following a fire on Sunday night.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the team was busy with mop-up operations on Monday morning as it prepared to replace the burnt transformer substation with a mini-substation.
“The fire did not extend to the main substation, so the main substation is still functioning even though we have embarked on an emergency shutdown. We are conducting tests to ensure that everything is still working well, but also to fix some of the equipment that got damaged by the fire.”
Mangena warns that the water supply to nearby areas will be affected.
"Unfortunately, this will affect the water supply in the area because of the linkage from the transformer substation to the Joburg Water reservoir nearby the substation. Currently, the affected areas include Discovery, Horizon and several surroundings.
“We are hoping that we will be able to complete this work by the evening, but we currently do not have the estimated restoration time.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Operators are on site doing an emergency isolation. For now, it appears that the Transformer at the back of the station has burnt.
