A video of the badly beaten teenager, who was accused of stealing alcohol at a popular local club, surfaced on social media earlier this week.

When his family went to look for Mbuthu they were told by community members had that he had eventually fled the scene of the assault.

However, on Friday police uncovered human remains  in the Tongaat River in KwaZulu-Natal.

"My plea to the community is that to anyone who may have information that could help the police and the NPA to build a strong case to contact the police," says the Model UN's Nhanhla Sizani.

''No wrongdoing justifies such a brutal murder of this young man, I am not even interested in what he did and if this was indeed a result of him stealing and I believe there could have been better alternatives."

Six suspects were in police custody for questioning on Friday.
