A policeman accused of assaulting a man was expected to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate's Court on Friday, said North West police.
The sergeant from the Setlopo village was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after he allegedly beat up another man while he was clothed in full police uniform, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.
The incident occurred earlier this month but was only reported to police on Tuesday. The officer was arrested on Wednesday.
"According to the information received by the police the victim went to a local tuck-shop and saw a friend of his having a confrontation with the police officer.
"When the alleged victim witnessed the said confrontation between his friend and the police officer on duty he decided to intervene and that is when the alleged assault took place," said Ngubane.
The officer has since been suspended.
