Northern Cape 'well endowed' with natural resources to tackle energy crisis, says Ramaphosa

African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa believes the natural resources of the Northern Cape could lift the country out of its energy crisis.

Ramaphosa made the remarks at the ANC's 108th birthday celebrations in Kimberly on Wednesday.


The governing party is preparing to celebrate its 108th birthday in the province on Sunday when Ramaphosa is expected to outline the organisation's programme for the year during its annual January 8 statement.


"The Northern Cape is well endowed with the sun and the wind that we can embark on energy projects that can pump electricity into the national grid," Ramaphosa said.


"Many other industries can emerge as we build the economy of the Northern Cape.”



Ramaphosa added that there is a lot of land in the Diamond City that needs to be properly utilized to create employment and economic opportunities.


"Our land reform process which includes the decision that was taken at the 54th conference of expropriating land will happen in the Northern Cape. It is important that we should revamp the agriculture of this province.


"There is a lot of land which is lying derelict which we now need to harnessed.”
