Nothing fishy: Mboweni declares Pilchards, Koo hamper, chocolates, whiskeys in 2019 MP register

Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests have released the register of members' Interests for 2019.

This is in accordance with the Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members' Interests for the National Assembly and Permanent Council Members.


"The committee continues to reiterate the importance of ethical disclosure of interests and is humbled by the commitment shown by most Members of Parliament from both Houses in upholding the good standing of Parliament by declaring their interests," the committee said in a statement on Monday.


"The work of the committee is to create public trust and confidence in public representatives as well as to protect the integrity of Parliament, and the production of this register reinforces accountability."


The cut-off date for submissions was September 2019 for the same financial year.


"Despite this, there were a number of MPs that did not disclose their interests before 13 September 2019.


"As a result, the committee has approved a report to both Houses with recommendations of possible sanctions," the committee added.


In the 827-page document, President Cyril Ramaphosa makes no declarations.


African National Congress (ANC) MP Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma declared shares and financial interests with Sasol and Sanlam.


The most expensive gift she declared was a R8,000 laptop from the Chinese Embassy.


ANC MP Tito Mboweni declared a box of Rhodes and Koo goodies hamper valued below R500.


The self-proclaimed chef also received a Pilchards hamper and a cookbook for less than R500.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who is now embroiled in a corruption scandal, made no declarations of business interests or sponsorships.


Mkhize's most expensive gifts are sheep, valued at R1,200 each.


He also lists wine, a R200 power bank, chocolates, biltong and nuts.


Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema received an R11,000 cellphone from Telkom.


He also received wine, books and flowers.


His business interests and family trusts include Ratanang Family Trust, Kopano Family Trust, Mazimbu Investment Trust as well as Munshedzi Family Trust.


Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen listed remuneration from asset manager North Star.


He also received a R19,000 laptop from a Mr K. Dilip, among other gifts.
