NPA denies involvement in Teffo arrest

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has denied any involvement in the execution of the warrant of arrest for Advocate Malesela Teffo.

Teffo, who represents four of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, was arrested inside the High Court in Pretoria last week.
The dramatic arrest has raised questions around the conduct of the police and the manner in which Teffo was arrested.
In a statement on Thursday, the NPA said it did not approve the warrant to be executed in or at court.
Spokesperson Phini Mjonondwane says an internal investigation was conducted into the events in court.

"An internal investigation into allegations that the Director of Public Prosecutions advised the investigating officer about the execution of the warrant was conducted. It became apparent that the DPP was not aware of the execution of the warrant, nor did his office approve that the warrant be executed in or at court.”
Teffo was arrested on charges of contempt after he allegedly failed to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates court in a separate matter in January.
He is accused of trespassing and assaulting a police officer.
Teffo subsequently appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court and released on bail of R10 000.
He is expected to be back in court in May.
