NPA: Eastern Cape ‘axe murderer’ abandons bail bid
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will be adding immigration violations to the litany of charges faced by a 32-year-old man accused of hacking to death a family from the Eastern Cape.
Nowa Makula, who is a Zimbabwean national, is accused of hacking to death a mother and six children with an axe in Elliotdale last month.
Makula (34) was expected to lodge a formal bail application in the Xhorha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, but decided to abandon his bid to be released from jail after it emerged that he is an illegal immigrant.
The court then postponed the case to January 28.
Spokesperson for the NPA in the Eastern Cape Luxolo Tyali says the court found that Makula was living in the country illegally.
“The man did appear in court and an additional charge of being in the country illegally was added, his case was postponed to the 28th of January and he has abandoned bail.”
Makula was the boyfriend of the woman and father of three of the children who were hacked to death with an axe.
