NPA turns to Constitutional Court in spy tapes case
The National Prosecuting Authority has approached the Constitutional Court to appeal the high court ruling against President Jacob Zuma in the so-called "Spy Tapes" case.
The high court in Pretoria last month denied Zuma and the NPA leave to appeal its earlier decision that the 2009 withdrawal of 783 charges of corruption against Zuma was irrational.
The charges relate to the 1999 arms deal.
NPA spokesperson Bulelwa Makeke said: "It's important that we went directly to the Constitutional Court to curtail this matter and make sure we get to the end of it. We need clarity on this constitutional issue of the separation of powers."
The DA brought the charges. It launched a court challenge over whether then acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Mokotedi Mpshe should have dropped the charges.
The high court found Mpshe had come under political pressure to withdraw the charges.
